A new study by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies has confirmed that 2016’s bleaching event was the worst ever recorded in the region—killing about 67 percent of corals in the reef’s pristine northern section. The event was triggered by higher water temperatures, a consequence of climate change. BBC
