As we at Sea Shepherd work to soon resume anti-poaching campaigns—especially joint at sea patrols led by West African governments and law enforcement—Sea Shepherd recognizes that illegal fishing disproportionately affects communities of color, throughout the world especially in the Global South. Their voices are actively excluded from the global fisheries narrative.
We acknowledge that racialized and gendered structures of colonialism—and the institutional pillars that uphold them—facilitate the continued exploitation of people of color around the world and particularly the African continent.
Sea Shepherd vows to listen to the experiences of communities of color, so that we can strive to learn how best we can be an ally in the fight for justice, alongside those in the streets and those at sea.
