Operation Jairo 5
Published by Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is proud to announce the return of Operation Jairo-Nicaragua.
On May 11, 2019, our volunteer crew returned to Padre Ramos, Nicaragua. They will spend the next three months protecting nesting sea turtles and their eggs from poachers.
Operation Jairo is named after Jairo Mora Sandoval, a Costa Rican turtle defender who was brutally murdered on May 31, 2013, while attempting to protect leatherback turtle nests. Our work continues his legacy, as we continue to defend sea turtles around the world.
This is our second campaign in Nicaragua. Last fall our crew worked along-side Sea Turtle Rescue, a local organization, for three months rescuing Olive Ridley sea turtles. Sea Shepherd relocated 3,906 eggs to a local hatchery where the hatchlings safely incubated until their release date, resulting in thousands of lives saved.
According to the IUCN Red List of threatened species, six of the seven species of sea turtles are listed as threatened or endangered. Sea turtles are threatened by human actions and lifestyles including ocean pollution, global warming, entanglement in fishing gear, coastal development, consumption, and illegal trade.
Operation Jairo 5 will focus on multiple species including hawksbill, olive ridley, and green sea turtles. Each night, our crew of ten volunteers will conduct nightly patrols looking for nesting mothers, as we continue to relocate nests to the hatchery where they can incubate safely. We have a biologist on staff from the Sea Shepherd Science department that will be assisting in the hatchery and on patrols to ensure the highest level of care for the sea turtles.
Our volunteers will also continue their weekly beach cleanups giving the nesting mothers, baby hatchlings, and other marine species living in the area a better chance of survival.
