Kelp-ful Ocean Education for Your Kids
Published by Ocean Conservancy
I hope everyone is doing as well as they can, during these unprecedented and rapidly changing times. If you are like me, you are filling your day spending more time with your kids, trying to find ways to keep them simultaneously educated and entertained.
One tool in my education toolbox has always been the Ocean Conservancy website. As a member of the Digital Team, I am fortunate to know every piece of content on each and every page. So, I thought I would share with fellow parents.
I hope you will dive in and explore these pages with your kids. I promise you won’t need a snorkel, flippers or a wetsuit.
Add a Splash of Color to Your Day
Do you have little ones at home that like to color? We have a variety of coloring page PDFs that you can download. You can either print them off to color with crayons or markers—or, you can open the PDF file in an application on your computer like Photoshop or Paint. Get to know some of our favorite ocean creatures with the coloring pages found on our website.
Learn More About Ocean Wildlife
I think my favorite section of the website has to be the wildlife factsheets. To date, we have 64 fin-tastic ocean animals that you can explore and learn more about—from polar bears to nurse sharks to copepods. There are plenty of marine species to fascinate and educate the bright young minds who are eager to learn more about the animals who call the ocean home.
DIY Projects
If you and your kids are feeling crafty, we have some DIY projects that you can work on at home that will transform plastic into something you can use in your home or garden. If you have any projects you’d like to share, connect with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. We’d love to see what you’ve made.
Explore Fin-tastic Children’s Ocean Books
Are you in need of a few new books to read? If so, we have a sea of ocean book recommendations that are sure to delight everyone in your household. These whale-y ocean-themed books were chosen for their ability to combine valuable educational lessons and reading practice with an ocean-themed twist, fostering an early appreciation of our ocean for children as they learn.
Trivia Time!
If you have a pod of inquisitive kids at home—turn the tables, by asking a few hard-hitting ocean questions. Ask them these ocean questions and see what they think the answer is—and then read our blog for the answers and see if your kids were right!
- Why do humpback whales breach?
- Who are the biggest animals in the ocean?
- What is a coral reef?
- How do gills work?
- Why do red-lipped batfish have red lips?
- How do octopuses change color?
A Ray of Hope
So, there you have it—just one additional digital touchpoint for your daily routine—the Ocean Conservancy website. There is plenty for you and your kids to learn and explore just by browsing our site.
Find Ocean Conservancy on social media and tell us how you’re doing! Connect with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. We’d also love to hear if your kids enjoyed learning on our site, see photos of your kid’s coloring pages, become inspired with photos of your DIY projects and hear what ocean animals you were excited most to learn all about.
Please, stay safe, healthy and try to remain optimistic. We will all get through this together.
