China, India, US: Transformative Energy Efficiency Practices

Energy efficiency is a proven solution to meet our energy needs around the world. Energy efficiency is critical to saving power, combating climate change, growing economies, and improving air quality. To advance energy efficiency solutions, NRDC’s team from China, India and the United States has been invited to share our expertise and knowledge on effective energy practice at INSPIRE 2017—a major energy efficiency conference with government officials, business leaders, civil society groups, and energy experts.
In emerging economies, such as India and China, energy efficiency is a tremendous opportunity to save energy given that much of the infrastructure—buildings, appliances, and transportation systems—has yet to be developed. In China, more than 70 percent of the country’s carbon emissions come from cities, and nearly one-third of that from energy spent to heat, cool, and power large buildings, already. In India, the building sector is expected to increase five-fold from 2005 to 2050. Air conditioning units are projected to skyrocket with less than six percent of market penetration today.
These booming markets provide a unique opportunity to act now to lock in energy efficiency and savings for decades to come. Leveraging our nearly 50 years of experience in energy efficiency, NRDC is working with partners in China and India on better building designs, smarter cooling technologies and more. In the United States, the Trump administration is attempting to slow progress on energy efficiency, but NRDC and our partners, along with key cities and states, will continue to lead in developing the cheapest, cleanest energy resource on the planet.
Held in Jaipur, India, the “International Symposium to Promote Innovation & Research in Energy Efficiency 2017 (INSPIRE-2017)” aims to highlight best practices in transformative policies, implementation, financing models and research initiatives from India and across the globe. INSPIRE is hosted by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited, the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy, and the World Bank, along with several other groups, including the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), The Energy & Research Institute (TERI), Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the MacArthur Foundation.
NRDC’s experts from the United States, China and India have been invited to present as key sessions:
- Energy Efficiency Market Transformation – International Experiences and Success Stories: presentation on U.S. breakthroughs, including the City Energy Project, California’s computer standards, ambitious standards and improving ACs by Anjali Jaiswal, NRDC expert.
- Lessons Learned from International Experiences for Enabling the ESCO Industry: discussion on China’s innovative China ESCO Industry Association (EMCA) by Zhiming Pan, NRDC expert.
- Putting the Spotlight on Indian States: release of spotlight paper, “How to Have Your Code and Implement It Too – Building Efficiency Code Adoption and Compliance in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh,” with special guest Hyderabad Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy, Professor Rajkiran Bilolikar from the Administrative Staff College of India, and Sameer Kwatra, NRDC expert.
- Energy Efficiency at the Heart of the National Cooling Action Plan: building on the strong progress during the Montreal Protocol meeting last week, discussion on developing India’s cooling action plan, led by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change with highlights from NRDC experts, Bhaskar Deol and Amartya Awasthi.
Energy efficiency is the quickest, cleanest, and cheapest way to meet our energy needs. Implementing energy efficiency programs is vital to transforming to clean energy economies around the world. NRDC is proud to be part of INSPIRE-2017 and looks forward to working with partners around the world toward our deep and broad approach to efficiency that is geared toward delivering maximum benefits, on a large scale, to all communities.
