Canyons & Seamounts Monument Comes Alive at Mystic Aquarium

One hundred fifty miles off the coast of New England and thousands of feet deep lies a unique and special place. Teeming with corals a thousand years old, whales, dolphins, sea birds, sea turtles, and more, the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument was designated in 2016 by President Obama under the Antiquities Act. It has tremendous ecologic, economic, and scientific importance, and all Americans benefit from its protections.
I will likely never have a chance to visit the monument, but I did have the opportunity to visit the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. The aquarium currently has an exhibit called Our Blue Park that brings the unique wildlife of the Monument to aquarium visitors. I spoke with Katie Cubina, senior vice president for mission programs at the aquarium.
“Our job is to bring special and magical places like this to the public,” said Cubina. Seeing the exhibit gives visitors a sense of the majesty of the Monument. To take a virtual tour through the exhibit and learn more, watch the video I shot below.
